Rehearsed Reading Night V

Tue 24 April 2018
The Peacock, Sunderland

Cranked Anvil’s hugely popular Rehearsed Reading Night returned to Sunderland in 2018, at their new permanent home The Peacock, right in the centre of Sunderland’s Cultural Quarter. I was delighted to be involved as producer, director, performer, and presenter.

This fifth night was, without doubt, our biggest and most successful yet, and we were delighted with the turn-out, as well as the feedback for the writers taking part. We’re looking forward to building on the success at our sixth event, taking place on 27th June 2018.

The hugely talented Josh Hodgson entertained the audience throughout the night – and we’re delighted that he’ll be coming back to play for us again on 27th June.

The programme for the evening was:

Reading the Stones by Iain Rowan
CAST: Abigail Lawson, Paul Hartley

A Mid-Winter Night’s Tale by Debra Fisher
CAST: Vanessa Karon, David Foster

The Interview by Glenda Young
CAST: Corey Muizelaar, Abigail Lawson, Vanessa Karon

Home or Away by Jeff Brown
CAST: Corey Muizelaar, Abigail Lawson, Paul Dunn, David Foster

Innocent by Jamie McLeish & Andrew Kirkwood
CAST: Paul Dunn, Paul Hartley, Vanessa Karon

The night proved a very successful one all round:

  • A local producing theatre has expressed interest in reading the full script of Jeff Brown’s Home or Away.

  • The writers of Innocent are in discussion with the actors and a local producer to develop a full production.

  • Iain Rowan was commissioned to write an audition monologue for one of our actors.

  • Corey Muizelaar was offered a job in an upcoming production of a Tom Hadaway play by the director, who happened to be present in the audience.

  • Plus: many more acquaintances were made as the evening proved to be a useful networking event for writers, actors, directors, and other creatives in the North-East…

In short – exactly the reason why Cranked Anvil stage these Rehearsed Reading Nights, and will continue to do so – we look forward to seeing you at the next one!
